Education System Analysis
Kenya has suffered a great deal in the arms of illiteracy since the precolonial era but has seen better and brighter days since the introduction of schools by the missionaries. The governments too have relentlessly fought to eradicate illiteracy and have managed to increase the levels of literacy allover the country. This has facilitated an improved living standard across the country.
The education system in Kenya is currently divided into several sectors which include; pre-primary education, primary education, secondary, college and universities. Each of the sectors has its own structure that guides it through.
History of Education System in Kenya
When the missionaries arrived in Kenya they introduced the 7-4-2-3 education system, where one had to go through seven (7) years of primary school, four (4) years of lower secondary school, two(2) years of senior secondary and finally three(3) years of university. This system was used until the year 1985 when the government of Kenya under leadership of the former president of Kenya Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi,introduced the 8-4-4 education system. The new system stated that one should go through a eight years primary education, four years secondary education and four years university education.
The education system in Kenya has evolved greatly over the period of years and is expected to improve even more with time especially with the introduction of the digital laptops into schools. The system seeks to eradicate the use of chalks and chalkboards in schools to ensure all learning is done in a digital method. The government is also seeking to introduce a new education system 2-6-3-3 .
The new model will ensure that one goes through pre-primary for two years and the primary education for six years and later join the junior secondary and senior secondary there after with each taking three years.Once done one will be left to decide if to join university or vocational training schools.
